PSA FOR Peace

Every year Empower Peace conducts a worldwide contest encouraging students to create and produce a 30 second television commercial (PSA) promoting mutual respect and peace. Empower Peace encourages any student in any school around the world to produce these PSAs.

Participants are asked to submit their PSAs via email or by sending in DVD copies to our offices. Two top awards are awarded: one to the best international submission and one to the best national submission. The winning selections are selected by members of Empower Peace’s staff and advisory board.

The PSA for Peace contest is a yearly competition held by Empower Peace as a way to get students to use cutting edge technology to promote peace in the world.  Winning submissions are given to various television outlets around the world.

LAST YEAR'S WINNERS

Millis High School from Millis, Massachusetts took home the top prize from American schools participating in the challenge.

The school’s entry, made by Dave Magley and Erika Decker, depicts a young man walking down the street past victims on the side of the road.  Instead of helping out each victim, the young man turns a blind eye and continues walking.  The video ends with eight words on the screen:  “The real weapon of mass destruction is apathy.”

“This experience was incredible. I learned a great deal this year throughout the process of creating my PSA. Before I began this project I only had a basic understanding of the equipment available to me through my school, but now I feel comfortable in all aspects of the process,” said Magley.  “I know that the experience I have gained through this project will stay with me throughout my life, and it is because of this project that I plan to incorporate film into my life for the future.”

Brummana High School in Brummana, Lebanon won the best PSA from international schools participating in the broadcast.  Omar Moujaes created the video that depicts a young woman and her dog in a field on a sunny day.  The beautiful blue sky suddenly becomes filled with scenes of bombs and explosions.  The young woman hears and sees the destruction, turns to the camera and states “Stop the war and make peace.”

For being selected as the top PSAs in the contest, both schools received brand new video cameras as prizes.

The two winning PSAs were selected from among dozens of entries from around the US and around the world.  There were triple the number of entries this year compared to last year.
